Pahokee - Dokee!
January 22 - 26, 2021
Our next stop was in Pahokee, Florida. We primarily used the Pahokee Marina and Campground as a staging ground for our adventure next week. We will be staying at the Flamingo Campground at the very bottom of Everglades National Park. As we will be pretty remote and services will be very limited, we wanted to ensure we were prepared!
You can probably guess by the name that, while at Pahokee, we were on a body of water! Specifically, we were camped on the shoreline of Lake Okeechobee. The lake has an estimated 28,000 alligators. From our campsite, we enjoyed watching one feed just a few yards out in the water. It was really entertaining to see this huge alligator floating so close to us! We also saw native birds along the shoreline.
At the same time, we were able to enjoy the spectacular sunsets Pahokee offers! The lake is surrounded by the Herbert Hoover Dike, which was built by the Army Corp of Engineers to protect against flooding caused by hurricanes. Along the top of the dike is a trail that we walked while enjoying the view of the lake.
The dike provides security for landowners surrounding the lake; however, it does come with its share of controversy. While it protects the landowners, it prevents the natural flow of water that makes up a share of the Everglades. It has greatly affected the Everglades and the wildlife that call the Everglades home.
While we were there, we stocked up on groceries, washed the RV, did laundry, walked along the top of the Herbert Hoover Dike, and located a veterinarian to get Frankie caught up with her immunizations. Now, if we were able to find the COVID vaccine and be caught up too!
Next up: Well, we have clean clothes and all the food we need. Everglades, here we come!!!!
Your day looks really warm. We are in Kissimmee (by Orlando) and it was cool and very windy today. I enjoy reading about your travels. Stay safe.
