Soaking Up The Scenery!

Day 6

June 12, 2025

We all woke up a bit blurry-eyed this morning, as the fire alarm went off around midnight.  It took the owner of the hotel about 10 minutes to arrive which, for the middle of the night, I thought was amazingly quick!  She had quite the time figuring out how to get it reset, but eventually the beeping stopped and we were all able to go back to sleep.  The good news: there is a fire alarm and we all know it works!

Our sleepy brains weren’t the only thing foggy that morning.  We got to take in the mysterious view the fog gives to the mountains on one side of “The 1” and the North Atlantic shoreline on the opposing side during today’s drive to Egilsstaôir.  This drive took us alongside the many fjords the east coast of Iceland offers.

Once we arrived in the town of Egilsstaôir, we kept on trucking and drove to the small coastline town of Seydisfjördur, located at the cove of a fjord.  Also, it is located at the base of the mountain.  The brakes on the van were very hot when we arrived.  Apparently, I was using them a lot on the way down!  Oops!  In town, we were quick to come across our second rainbow road of the trip!  The first one was leading up to Reykjavik’s iconic Hallgrimskirkja Church.  This rainbow leads to the Little Blue Church!  It’s one of Iceland’s many famous and oft-painted scenes.

This quaint town has several handcrafted gift shops along with a few restaurants.  I do love shopping; however, for this stop, we were mostly interested in seeing the sights and hiking to the Tvisöngur (“singing concrete”) Sound Sculpture.  This five-domed, concrete structure is interconnected inside, allowing you to walk from dome to dome within it.  The idea is that from within, each dome resonates a different tone.  Together, the domes correspond to the five-tone harmony of traditional Icelandic music.

While hiking to the Tvisongur Sound Sculpure, we took a side trip to yet another waterfall, Búdareyarfoss!  Hiking up to this waterfall had a bonus feature to it; we had a stunning view of the fjord below!  This town had become a popular spot for cruise ships to stop at, as have many of the other coastal Iceland towns.  We lucked out and no cruise ship was there the day we visited.  Although it was a calm and peaceful the day we were there, I’m sure it turns into quite a different scene once a ship arrives!

After exploring the town, we headed back to Egilsstaôir and got checked into our hotel, Gistihúid – Lake Hotel Egilsstaôir. Shortly after, we headed out to yet another geothermal bath experience.  Vök Baths was similar to the famous Blue Lagoon.  Simply amazing!  It has three separate pools heated to warm, warmer, and warmest, all from the warmth of magma! Adjacent was the lake which you could enjoy a cold plunge in.  The pools were connected to the lake with an infinity wall which made for an amazing and relaxing afternoon.  Wait, or was it the swim-up bar that gave me the amazing and relaxing afternoon?

Cold plunge!

Dinner out and we were ready to call it a day.  Iceland, you certainly continue to impress us!

Next up:  Myvatn!
